Welcome to the Norwegian Sufi Community 

🇬🇧 Our community has its base in Norway. We work locally as well as internationally. 

We represent a universal path of Sufism, which was brought from the East to the

West about 100 years ago by the mystic Hazrat Inayat Khan.

Sufism is a mystical tradition as old as humankind, not confined to any religion. 

Traces of Sufism can be found worldwide; it is considered the core of all religions and spiritual traditions. 

Hazrat Inayat Khan brought what he called The Message of Love, Harmony, and Beauty to the West. His being embodied the transformed self. He often called Sufism the religion of the heart.

 Our community is open to all, as we recognize and respect all spiritual traditions

and different outlooks on life.

Hazrat Inayat Khan formidlet det han kalte Budskapet, og hans egen væren viste omgivelsene hans det som kalles det transformerte selvet.

Han kalte det ofte en religiøs filosofi om kjærlighet, harmoni og skjønnhet.

 Samfunnet vårt er åpent for alle. Vi  anerkjenner og respekterer alle åndelige

tradisjoner og ulike livssyn.

Sufism

Sufism is sometimes seen as a religion, especially connected to Islam. Although we find Sufism in Islam, it is not the same. Sufism differs from religion as it does not have any dogmas we find in religions. Sufism is a way of life, a philosophy, and a mystical path toward reality. We can find traces of Sufism within all spiritual traditions, including well-known religions. Throughout the ages and in different areas, Sufism was called different names. Underneath names given to it, we find the same Inner quest for truth, which has existed in humanity from the earliest beginning. It is not exactly known where the name Sufi comes from. Some say it is derived from the woolen clothing of early practitioners of Sufism; others think it is derived from the Greek word for Wisdom. Sufism is also called Tassawuf. This means "becoming a Sufi."

Traces of Sufism

Sufism has always been present throughout the history of humanity. It is as old as humankind itself. Most of us have heard of mystics like Rumi, Shams I Tabriz, Hafiz, and there are many more. As they lived in an Islamic area, they brought their teachings filtered through an Islamic lens. This is then often referred to as Islamic Mysticism. But mysticism is not confined to one place, form or one people. It is a universal omong all of humanity. Mystics can and will emerge where they are needed. Also, in Europe, mystics appeared, who brought their teachings through a Christian lens as they lived in a Christian area. Then, it is called Christian Mysticism. These mystics include Meister Eckhart, Margarethe Porete, Theresa of Avila, and many more. Mysticism from India is sometimes called Indian mysticism. Other mystics choose to express themselves through the configuration of Nature, called Nature Mysticism. In reality, there is only mysticism, not different sorts of mysticism. That one mysticism is served with sauce for different people at different times. All these mystics can be called Sufis regardless of their background and in whatever form they brought their mystical thought into the world.

In the Middle Ages, movements emerged in Europe, like the Brethren of the Free Spirit. Those movements were related to mystics and emerging mystical thought. Much of the teachings within such movements can be easily called Sufism. Like all mystics and mentioned movements, Sufism teaches that we will not find God within a church or mosque. We find God in our hearts.

Mysticism itself is a direct experience of the life within. Wherever this life is caged, whether it happens within the individual or by institutionalizing it collectively, it slowly disappears. Life can only flourish in freedom.
